Evan & Mariah

In 2020, Evan and Mariah moved from Southern Alberta to Fernie, and from the moment they arrived, they felt like they were home. This transition marked a pivotal moment in their lives, as they wholeheartedly embraced the mountain lifestyle—immersed in skiing, biking, and spending time outside. As the couple continued the adventure to the West Kootenays, the magnetic pull of Fernie continued to be strong, knowing they would return to Fernie to get married.

“It was the perfect middle ground between us and our families in Alberta, and we knew we wanted to tie the knot surrounded by the mountains we spent so much time in,” says Mariah.

The vision started before the two were engaged, at one of their favourite après ski locations, Fernie Distillers.

“When we had friends or family in town, it was a regular stop on our “must sees” in Fernie and we knew it would be the perfect wedding venue. Getting to have our reception there set the vision for the rest of the day,” she adds.

Opting for an intimate day with approximately 30 guests, Evan and Mariah veered from convention to curate an experience that was uniquely their own. Collaborating with local vendors, such as Mountain Air Events, Tara Hill Studios, Fernie Catering, and the Tipsy Baker, the duo watched as the elements seamlessly came together.

“Our wedding day, set against the stunning backdrop of Fernie’s mountains, became a celebration not just of our union, but of the love story we continue to write together.”

Q&A
1. What is your favourite moment of your wedding day?
After the ceremony, we deviated from the traditional receiving line in favour of a more spirited celebration, a collective toast with our wedding guests. While the typical choice is champagne, we opted for a more personalized touch by selecting “his and hers” Scotches. We spent the next half-hour spending time with our friends and family where we were able to connect and celebrate right away. Rather than saving our wedding cake for our first anniversary, next year we’ll have a toast with the same Scotches we enjoyed that day.

2. What advice would you give other couples planning their own wedding?
Amidst the whirlwind of wedding preparations, it’s easy to get consumed by logistics and day-of details. One of the best choices we made was enlisting the help of Jessica and Margot from Mountain Air Events to support us in the month leading up to the wedding, and on the day. Our photographer, Tara Hill, was also a huge help with scheduling and keeping the day moving. Their support handling the details meant that we and our family could fully enjoy the wedding.

3. How did you make your day unique /personal to you?
Similar to our selection of the Distillery, the ceremony location was another of our favourite locations in Fernie. We had spent countless hours cross-country skiing at Fernie Nordic Society’s trails and in 2022 got engaged at the top of Lizard Lookout. We were fortunate enough to also host our ceremony on the Nordic trails. It was an amazing full-circle moment at a place that was really special for us. We know when we hit the trails this winter, we’ll be reminded of our wedding day.
