Mac and Jaylene

Mac and Jaylene chose to settle down in Fernie, after having lived in nine different cities and towns combined.

“It’s where we call home. Having lived in so many different places throughout our lives, our friends and family are scattered throughout Canada,” Mac says. “We knew that we wanted a smaller wedding with good food, good drinks, good company, and good times and getting married in Fernie was an opportunity for this, and to also have everyone come visit and to see what this amazing town has to offer.”

Similar to Mac and Jaylene, their friends and family members are passionate about the outdoors and the mountains, so it was easy for the couple to integrate many of their favourite outdoor activities into the wedding day.s and the mountains, so it was easy for the couple to integrate many of their favourite outdoor activities into the wedding day.

They also focused on working with local vendors as much as possible, using Patti’s Party Rentals for the tent, Fernie Catering Co. for their amazing dinner, Funky Goat Pizza for a midnight snack, McKenzie Jespersen for photography, and Sparrow for hair.

“They were all very accommodating and helped to make our day special,” Mac adds.

In addition to their main vendors, Mac and Jaylene organized for Rooftop Roasters to prep morning coffees for their large group, they met at Big Bang Bagels for a post-wedding hangover bagel and rented a keg from Fernie Brewing for a pre-wedding house party.

Q&A

1. What is your favourite moment of your wedding day?

It’s so hard to choose as the day flew by, but if we could pick one moment, it was our walk home at the end of the night. It was easily the rainiest day of September, but as we walked home from downtown on the side of the highway at 3am, the clouds cleared and the moon and stars were out illuminating the Fernie skyline and we got to pause and soak in how our amazing wedding day unfolded. We took the time to appreciate all the help we didn’t know we needed from friends, family and the vendors.

If our guests had to choose a highlight, it would definitely be the dinner from Fernie Catering Co. Barrie did such an amazing job and the harvest board paired perfectly with our fall theme!

2. What advice would you give other couples planning their own wedding?

We decided to keep our wedding small and intimate which meant that we got to spend quality time with everyone who came. We booked a few key vendors far in advance and the rest fell into place! We also recommend booking an experienced photographer to capture all of the moments during the day. After nine years of photos of us in running or cycling gear, it was nice to finally get some professional photos of us all dressed up!

Lastly, we also had a house party the night before the wedding so our friends and family could drop in for a BBQ and beer as they rolled into town. Since we have many different friend groups, everyone had a chance to meet before the wedding and we felt this made it even more enjoyable.

3. How did you make your day unique /personal to you?

Before the day kicked off, Jay and her sister assembled fall coloured bouquets and simple floral arrangements with flowers grown locally in our community garden plot and a family member’s garden, with a few additions of greenery from out our back door and wheat from a family farm. It was really special to have the flowers that we spent all summer keeping alive as a personal touch on our wedding day.

Even though it was our wedding day, we were sure to include some of our favourite Fernie activities in the morning. Mountain bikers did a lap of Swine Flu, while runners did a quick loop around town finishing off with a coffee at Rooftop. We then wrapped up the morning with a few holes of disc golf with our dog before the festivities really began!

For our ceremony, we legally got married with two witnesses beforehand at the Red Sonja car and then had our informal ceremony with guests at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre. The Nordic Centre was a great outdoor option as we could put up tents to provide coverage. Even in the rain, it provided the perfect fall backdrop for our ceremony.

Lastly, our reception was at Fernie Distillers and we can’t say enough good things about them. From helping with a custom killer cocktail menu, to allowing us to decorate as we wanted, they were flexible and accommodating. We loved that it already had a really nice interior space so we could keep our decorations simple. All we added were a few bike wheels and a vintage bike with a basket to drop off cards. We added a few growlers from one of our favourite breweries which included our homegrown floral arrangements to add some fall colours and a personal touch.
